From The Pastor (The following is adapted from an article by one my favorite Pastor/Teachers, John Piper). Luke 6:35-36 says, “But love your enemies…and you will be sons of the Most High….Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” The two phrases in bold type point to a deep truth in the Christian life. “Be merciful as your Father is merciful” implies clearly that Jesus is treating His disciples as children of God. God is their Father. They are His children. So they should be merciful because they have a Father who is merciful. But what does Jesus mean when He says, “Love your enemies…..and you will be sons of the Most High?” Is loving your enemies the condition or the result of being sons of God? “Love your enemies…and you will be sons of the Most High,” means: “When you act this way you prove to be chips off the Old Block.” That is the way your Father is. So you show that you are born of God. You have His nature. You prove to be His children. Loving your enemies does not make you children of God. Love is the way people act that are born of God. Be merciful as Your Father is merciful. Who do you need to show mercy to? And who, despite how unloving they act, need you to show them love? Who do you need to risk loving in such a way? Remember, when you do, you become in action and practice what you are by your calling and by your faith. Longing to be like Jesus, Pastor Earl
